As we journey on this healthier path our bodies will become our health teacher IF we will listen to it. Some of you may have already experienced the teaching our bodies provide, I know I have. Now I just need to LISTEN and LEARN.

Our bodies have an amazing way of teaching us and quite honestly we usually don’t like how it goes about providing us the lesson. The body communicates by using the physical feelings (symptoms) we experience. When healthy choices are being made we are rewarded by feeling good. When poor choices are made our bodies let us know by making us feel sick or get achy.

The most recent example I have of this was this past weekend as we celebrated my daughters birthday. We spent the weekend traveling which for us meant no exercise, excessive sitting, many poor food choices culminating with sugar filled desserts as we celebrated. Sugar is one the food items I have been minimizing during my health challenge, when I over indulged (excessively) my body took it upon itself to attempt to teach me a lesson. I felt horrible (stomach pain, fatigue, joint aches) for the better part of three days. I appreciate that the symptoms were flu like but somehow, in these times of teaching, I know these symptoms are not virus related it is my body screaming that it needs my attention. It’s like the teacher yelling at the student in the back of the classroom that is messing around to stop what they are doing and pay attention. My body was yelling at me, “I don’t like what you are doing, stop messing around, I need better fuel than what you are giving me. Are you going to listen to me this time?”

Here is the tough part. Just like the teacher who has to continually yell at the same student for the same issue and gets no where, our body, when it realizes we are not going to listen, gives up telling us about the issue and just moves on. Once the body “moves on” we start to feel better, not because we are better but because our body stops talking to us. When we get to this point we are in a perilous situation. We continue to perpetuate the bad habits which then silently leads to poor health which then leads to disease.

Let’s run a scenario. Work and life are currently very stressful but I don’t have time to stop. I find myself losing focus and feeling fatigued, I’m not sleeping well and if my blood pressure was taken it would likely by high. All of these symptoms are your body begging for some attention and the need for changes. Instead of listening we push on so the body stops with many of the symptoms and because we are feeling better we taking on more projects and the stress gets even higher. At the next annual physical exam, the doctor informs us that our blood pressure is through the roof, your A1-C is off the charts, you appear to have sleep apnea, and you have put on over 20 pounds in the last year. You go home with a list of new medications and an overwhelming sense of eminent doom.

You can apply this same concept to any health challenge you are taking on. Too much alcohol, smoking, over eating, lack of exercise, poor relationships, bad self esteem. Any issue you are dealing with, if you carefully think about it, there was a time early on when your body tried talking to you about the poor choices you were making and you just wouldn’t listen.

Don’t give up! Listen harder, apply the lessons with more tenacity, be persistent and the results will come.

Ready for some good news? Here it is, it is profound; it is never to late to start. When is it ever wrong to develop the good habit of listening? Start listening to your body and then act on the lessons you are being taught. I will admit, the older I get the harder it is and longer it takes see positive outcomes that result from positive choices. DON’T GIVE UP!!!! Listen harder, apply the lessons with more tenacity, be persistent, the results will come.

I hope you are having a great day and I hope these posts are as encouraging to you as they to me. Keep fighting the good fight.

Wishing you great health.

  1. Frank Bargerhuff says:

I’ll be listening…even better & closer now. Thanks for the transparency & encouragement to keep pushing forward, even though that forward motion may be slowed.

  2. This is so true. We get so busy we fail to listen to our bodies until it get real bad. I recently had a rough spell in Nov. The advice you gave me was simple yet so critical. I have been on track religiously since. I am also making a commitment for a healthy 2022 and beyond. I cannot thank you enough. See you soon.
